Issues of equity and education have long existed in our country and
continue to manifest today. How can writing and the power of one's
voice help us respond to these disparities? Join us for a conversation
with writer and educator, Dr. Clint Smith, where we will hear his
poetry and re ections on working for justice, equity, and civic agency
in our schools.

About the Presenters:
Dr. Clint Smith is a writer, teacher, and Emerson Fellow at New
America. He is the author of the poetry collection, Counting Descent,
and the forthcoming non ction book How the Word is Passed. His
writing has been published in The New Yorker, The New York Times
Magazine, The Atlantic, Poetry Magazine, The Paris Review and
elsewhere. He received his B.A. from Davidson College and a Ph.D. from
Harvard University.
Sarah Stuart is a Senior Program Associate who provides site-based
coaching for teachers implementing Facing History and plans and
facilitates workshops and seminars each year. Prior to joining the
Facing History sta , Sarah taught the Facing History Elective and AP
Psychology for ve years at a legacy Memphis City School. She
received her B.A. in Humanities and Psychology from the New College
of California and an M.A. in Instruction and Curriculum Leadership at
the University of Memphis.
Sarah Shields is a Senior Program Associate in the Chicago o ce of
Facing History and Ourselves. Prior to joining Facing History in 2013,
she served as an assistant principal and nationally board-certi ed high
school social studies teacher in Chicago Public Schools. Sarah's work in
CPS focused on drop-out prevention, successful matriculation to high
school, and cross-cultural relationships in schools. Sarah earned a B.A.
in History from UCLA, a Master of Arts in Teaching Secondary Social
Studies from The American University in Washington, DC, and an
Education Specialist degree from National-Louis University in Chicago.
