The% event% had% a% very%
casual%atmosphere%despite%
the%gamut%of%serious%quesQ
tions%and%comments%about%
Davidson%and%LGBTQ%isQ
sues.%%Shamus%Cooper%’16%
was%one%of%the%many%panQ
elists% who% believed% that%
Davidson% did% not% underQ
stand% how% to% treat% queers%
and% others% with% nontradiQ
tional% views% of% sexuality%
on%campus.%
“I% felt% fetishized% when%
in% drag.% People% groped%
my% fake% boobs% and% they%
laughed.% But% if% I% was% a%
chick% that’d% be% sexual% assault,”% Shamus%
stated.%
The% panel% tackled% the% topics% of% proper%
pronoun% usage,% gender% expression% and% the%
challenges% of% coming% out.% “Coming% out% is%
a% never% ending% process,”% Rob% Stevens% ’14%
explained.%“You%have%to%explain%every%new%
place%you%go%to.”
The% honest% and% open% window% into% the%
viewpoints% of% the% panelists,% though% a% very%
simple% process,% was% monumental% in% face%
of% the% issue% it% was% tackling.% The% panelists%
revealed% through% their% sometimes% opposQ
ing% opinions% on% topics% and% personal% beQ
liefs%not%whether%they%were%gay,%straight%or%
questioning%–%but%that%they%were%human.%It%
is% too% easy% to% take% the% LGBTQ% movement%
sexual%identity%and%preference,%a%pricy%misQ
take.%As%Dylan%Goodman%’16%put%it,%“Being%
queer%isn’t%so%exotic.%It’s%being%human,%too.%
My% sexuality% means% as%
much%to%me%as%it%does%for%
a%straight%person.”
The% panel% was% eye%
opening% to% those% unfaQ
miliar% with% the% LGBTQ%
movement% that,% much%
like% any% community% of%
people,%is%full%of%people%
with%incredibly%different%
attitudes% and% opinions.%
By% being% onstage% and%
answering%questions,%the%
panelists% helped% bridge%
the% gap% between% knowQ
ing%about%the%movement%
and%being%able%to%associQ
ate%it%with%names,%faces%and%people.%“ActivQ
ism%is%importanti%people%can%see%people%and%
it%can%help%them%if%they%want%to%come%out.”%
Natalie%Williford%’14%explained.
By%taking%part%in%the%event,%the%panelists%
did% their% best% to% make% the% campus% a% place%
where%no%closeted%person%would%live%in%fear.%
