Alpha Kappa Alpha is the first Greek-lettered sorority established and incorporated by African American college women. The sorority was founded on January 3, 1908 at Howard University in Washington. D.C. The sorority serves through a membership of more than 200, 000 women in over 975 chapters in the United States and several other countries. As the Sorority grew, it kept in balance two important themes; the importance of the individual and the strength of an organization of women of ability and courage. The Sigma Psi chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha was established at Davidson College on November 23, 2008 and it is the first sorority at Davidson. - Date
