From a Machi House Rush Booklet, circa 1970:
Dear Freshmen
As you well know, the social patterns at Davidson are undergoing a great transformation. The whole fraternity system is being strenuously questioned both from within and from without. In the early weeks of this school year we at The Machi House questioned the old system, in particular our association with a national fraternity, and found it lacking. As a result, on October 9 we voted to disaffiliate with the Sigma Chi fraternity and to form the first local social and eating club on the Davidson Campus.
Our position at The Machi House is unique and so too are the opportunities we can offer you, the freshman. We have combined the best elements of the old fraternity system with a fresh, enthusiastic approach to social life at Davidson. As a Machi you will become a part of a completely autonomous organization free of meaningless rituals. The pledge training and social programs that you participate in will be those that you helped design, in short you will take part in creating all the programs, procedures, and traditions that you will be associated with at the Machi House during your four years at Davidson.
