As this is the Davidson College Women's Center's first year on campus, background information concerning the Women's Center is fundamental as part of a budget proposal.
In the Spring of 1980, when the Kimmel House became available, Bill Bolding proposed the house be used for students and for programs designed to stress women's strengths and potential. Basic ground rules were set. Programs are not limited to "women only." Men need to be educated to as to women's roles as much as any woman. All potential roles for women are the concern of the Women's Center.
In the Fall of 1980 a Board was established and a Statement of Purpose was drawn up. The purpose of the Women's Center is to serve all women at Davidson College by supporting their personal growth and by encouraging inquiry into issues which directly affect women. The Center seeks to promote emotional and political development by providing a meeting place, resources and progressive programming.
As the Women's Center has had no budget for the academic year of 1980-1981, financial support for programming has been received from the Dean of Student's Office, the Housing Office, the English Dept., the Union Speaker's Committee, the Campus Forum Committee, the Poetry Committee, and the Union Activities Grant Foundation.
Besides the programs and events listed in the following Fall and Winter Financial Statement, the Women's Center had sponsored several informal discussions; served as the meeting place for the Davidson College's chapter of NOW, DCF small group meetings, and the Open Sesame Food Co-op; and presently houses six women students. - Language
