- Over seventy women on the Davidson College campus have come together to create a fourth eating house, Turner House. Primarily, this addition to Patterson Court serves to eliminate problems of overcrowding in the three existing eating houses. With such active interest and participation in self-selection, the fourth eating house also serves to accommodate the needs of women who will join Patterson Court in the future. By offering another option on the court, Turner House aims to preserve the tradition of self-selection and allow for more diversity on Patterson Court. We have chosen to name the house as a tribute to Catherine Turner for her strong Christian faith, moral integrity, and compassion. During her years at Davidson College, Ms. Turner was a member of Rusk House and was an active student on campus. After graduating in 1993, she served as the Davidson College Service Coordinator for three years. Ms. Turner has been involved in the Habitat project, has sung in her church choir, and has served as a Vista Volunteer. She now serves as the Ada Jenkins Center after school tutoring coordinator. In the spirit of Ms. Turner’s commitment to service, we strive to model Turner House after her strong example. We believe that the addition of another eating house can not only help to improve court relations, but also can create more opportunities for Patterson Court to positively affect the Davidson College campus and surrounding communities. We have a unique opportunity for service activities because Catherine Turner is such an active force in the community. We aim to work with Ms. Turner in the Davidson area, and we are also interested in targeting some of our service activities specifically towards the needs of women. Turner House pledges a strong commitment to leadership, stewardship, and fellowship, and we look forward to female interaction and active participation in community service activities.
