“A brick building for the laundry was erected, which, together with a boiler room, shelving, painting, etc., cost 5,400. The equipment for the laundry cost 5,700, including the electric driven motor and other appliances. In making up the accounts at the end of the fiscal year I charged against the operating accounts of the laundry 5% depreciation on the building and 10% on the equipment, a total of $800 which was turned over to the permanent fund to be kept intact as a reserve for replacement in later years. A local man, Mr. H.P. Helper, without previous experience in laundry work, was employed at a salary of 100.000 per month to run the laundry for us. Unexpected and unavoidable delay was encountered in getting our machinery in time to have it installed and ready for operation before college opened. Some confusion in marking and in handling this work resulted in considerable loss at the opening of college, which it seemed the college should make good as any other laundry would do. The force, however, quickly got adjusted and only an occasional loss was made or complaint heard after Christmas. The aggregate loss was for the year 670.00. We charged the students 2.50 per month and did not limit him to the amount that he should send to the laundry. After the force organized we began taking business from the town people and the faculty. The amount of income from this source grew monthly until it reached the total of 139.00 for the month of April. The total for the year was 524.00. After paying for our losses and charging off the depreciation and paying for eight month’s operation, the laundry made a profit of 1,300.00 as shown by the auditors report.”
