The events portrayed in this newsletter are significant in that they speak to the accomplishments of our women athletes during a period of tremendous challenges. Given the size of the female population at the College, it would be significant to compete at any level, but we have just successfully finished our first year at the NCAA Division I level. No NCCA Division I institution has a more ambitious athletics program than ours, one of the key factors that distinguishes Davidson from a number of excellent liberal arts colleges throughout the country. As the smallest college or university sponsoring a full range of Division I sports, we routinely compete with larger, richer, and less selective opponents. Davidson College is certainly aware of the challenge this presents to our student athletes and over the past three years the college has made a concerted effort to upgrade the quality of women's sports. The improvements have largely come in three areas: (1) additional coaching personnel and more realistic coaching assignments; (2) completion of plans for new, improved facilities; and. (3) significant increases in sports budgets. Therefore, as you read this newsletter on our women sports programs I hope that you join me in the pride of the accomplishments and sense the spirits of cooperation and common purpose that permeates our program.
