- It used to be that you had a better chance of hitting a bullseye blindfolded at 40 paces than running into a female on the Davidson College rifle range. Blindfolded at 40 paces bullseyes are still difficult to hit but there are a few girls finding a home on the range at Davidson, an occurence which surely must bring an approving smile to the face of the ghost of Annie Oakley. And if that is not the case it does, without a doubt, bring a smile to the face of Davidson rifle coach Capt. Abel White, who is optimistic about this year's team. The rifle roster lists two coeds- Mary Turner, a senior from Salisbury, and Sue Beazley, a junior from Atlanta. That in itself is heartening news. But the bad news is that Southern Conference rules prohibit them from competing in conference or non-conference matches against male competition. However, they are permitted to compete against the female members of other teams that have coed rosters. Turner qualified with 235 score of out of a possible 300 last week and that was high enough for her to be included on the six-man team that happened against Wofford Dec. 1. "We ran an intramural rifle contest last year," White said. Mary competed, like it and said she would like to try out for the team. She is one of our top shooters. Sue is going to be a good one, too." Without the girls White has a veteran team, led by Ross McCloy, a junior from Panama City, Fla., who was named the team's most valuable member last year. Pete Goodman, a sophomore from Ridgewood, N.J.; Clark McChestney, a junior from Wilmington, N.C., Bob Miles, a junior from Richmond, Va., and Brad Sabastian, senior from Davidson, are all letter-men. In addition, newcomers Ben Simms, a freshman from Atlanta; Curt Goho, a freshman from Princeton, N.J. and Ted Mumby, a foreign exchange student, have been shooting well. Goodman qualified with a 256 and Simms a year prior to the opening match last week. "We are quite optimistic about our chances this year," White said. "We shot a team score of 1232 out of a possible 1500 last week. Last year at this year we were shooting only 1080. We have a lot of experienced shooters back and Benn Simms was asked to attend N.C. State on a rifle scholarship. He has shot as high as 283." The results: Wofford 1269, Davidson 1229.
