Much to the regret of the Secretary she was late for the meeting of the Club on April 19th and failed to hear Miss Holt’s account of Sidney Lanier’s life & works. Miss Holt handed over the following notes – “It is marvelous what was accomplished in the short span of 39 years. Of these the most important milestones are his birth at Macon, Ga., Feb. 3, 1842, his graduation at eighteen years of age from Oglethorpe College; his enlistment in The Mason Volunteers in 1861; his service as a private & later as an officer under the Signal Service. Exposure at this period led to his decline in health. In 1867 he married Miss Mary Day of Macon. After a rather unsuccessful attempt at Law, in 1873 he moved to Baltimore & then his real work in Literature began. Previously “Tiger Lilies,” a novel, had been published. Then followed in rapid succession Poems, his two great works “The Science of English Verse,” “The
[Page 2] English Novel & the Principals of its Development,” then his four books for boys. The two great triumphs of his life were the Lectureship in John Hopkins’ University & earlier to the Peabody Orchestra as first flute & Captata. He died Sept. 7, 1881 at Lynn, Pock Co., N.C. & his remains taken to Balti. His He has four sons, three of whom are now actively identified with publishing houses in New York City & one of whom bearing the name of his father is now living upon a farm in Georgia!! Miss Holt selected well chosen quotations from Lanier’s Poems which were given to each one present to read. Mrs. Price read extracts from some of Lanier’s letters, showing him as a letter - writer. They were so interesting it made us wish we could read them all. Mrs. Smith gave the musical Impressions of the Poet & much to the delight of all Mrs. Martin sang “Sunset,” words by Lanier & music by Dudley Buck.
[Page 3] Miss Dupuy read “My Springs,” a lovely poem addressed to the poet’s absent wife. One of the most interesting features of the programme was a letter which Miss Holt read from Mrs. Lanier to a friend of hers in Western N.C. who was soon to be married. The Roll Call, Current Events which were given by Miss Young & the Minutes followed. Miss Luke & Miss Neel were welcomed as visitors. Much talking & a good time in general laughing went on while we enjoyed the refreshments Miss Holt served were being enjoyed & the time for leaving came all too soon.
