Description
[Page 1] At the regular meeting of the book club Friday afternoon Feb. 12, 1904 more than the usual members were present. Either the younger members of the families didn’t require mustard plaster or soothing syrup or everyone knew there was plenty of room in Miss Holt’s parlor; or for some other reason eleven members responded to the roll with very interesting items. All were glad to welcome Mrs. Graham back after a long absence from our meetings and also to entertain one guest-Miss Jennings. Current events were omitted for the simple reason no one was appointed to give them; for although all kept up with the Russo-Japanese war; take a peep at Congress occasionally, and know about Panama’s first present
[Page 2] still no one feels like telling such things in the meeting without time to look up some dates and at least have our voice “steadied” for the occasion. A change was made in the program by having the criticisms of the books near the beginning instead of the last thing and according to the custom of the club, they were very varied. Daphne was the book for the afternoon, though small in size, it called forth many interesting things about its author. Miss Margaret Sherwood. Mrs. Dupuy gave a criticism of the book; Mrs. Smith told something of Miss Sherwood’s life while Mrs. Harrison and Miss Holt gave the personal side. Miss Sherwood graduated some years ago from Vassar where she won honors; four years later got her PhD at Yale; and is now Associate professor of Literature at Wellesley. Notwithstanding her literary attainment she seems to enjoy
[Page 3] living in a little cottage and like most housekeepers, tries to find something new in the way of dainty dishes to serve her friends who find her sympathetic , bright, and entertaining. Daphne is a sweet, pure little story- a charming bit of fancy and is filled with the subtle charm that persists and lingers in the mind of the reader long after the final page is finished. Miss Thompson gave us some very sweet Italian music after which Miss Holt served refreshments in her most charming manner.
