The concrete dam is 1279 feet long with 11 flood gates and a total length of 7387 feet of earth and concrete dams. Lake Norman offers excellent fishing, boating and swimming. . .more variety to North Carolina's Variety Vacationland. When Lake Norman was completed, the riverboat Robert E. Lee was moored just above Davidson. It had a happy life-but brief. It burned within a couple of years after it was launched.
