Originally, when Davidson was founded in 1837, all of residence life existed in three buildings, Oak, Elm, and Cedar. But, the increasing student body necessitated the construction of new housing. Originally constrained by a very strict budget, Davidson expanded from the original setup to a more situated and developed area known as Dorm Row.
Modern Students quarters meeting all requirements in construction, lighting and plumbing of U. S. Air Forces, the 24th Training Detachment of which was domiciled here during World War II.

In 1964, about 20 years after the “bucket brigade” to and the dedication of the Grey Memorial Library, D. Grier Martin, president of Davidson College from 1958 to 1968, began formulating plans for a new, modern library, with an initial estimated cost of $2.2 million and a $25 million ten-year renovation program
Economics Department
Although Economic courses appear in the original curriculum and have been taught continuously at Davidson College, they did not appear as separate “Department of Instruction” until the 1920s.
William “Bill” Davidson Edwards, Class of 1953, was a fictional alumnus of Davidson College, created by Mike Myers, also Class of 1953. As the Alumni Secretary of the Class of 1953, Myers would gather news from fellow classmates to put in the “Class Notes” section of the Davidson College Bulletin. As a joke, Myers created a fictitious character, Bill Edwards. Periodically, he would update his fellow classmates on the dramatic adventures and stories of “good ole Bill” in the class notes.
The Encyclopedie contains both text volumes and separate volumes of plates, all beautifully and intricately done. The representations of animals in the section on “Histoire naturelle” are particularly beautiful, as are the astronomical and mechanical representations.
