Report on New Professor's Residence:
The plan was presented to the Building Committee and approved by them. It was also approved by the Finance Committee. As drawn by Hook, the house was found to cost neatly $3,000.00, but many changes were made without injuring materially its convenience and roominess. And finally James W. Brown of Mooresville bid $2,118.77, which was $300.00 (less) than the next highest, and the contract was awarded to him on the condition that his Charlotte brother should have entire charge of the work. This bid was exclusive of grates and mantels. The work, and material have been very satisfactory - in fact, nearly every one of the "oldest inhabitants" say that no such work has ever been done at Davidson. So far as I can now estimate, the cost of the house, and necessary out houses will he as follows:
Architects fee: $25.00
Digging well - about: $34.00
Deepwell pump, and placing same: $17.00
Paper borders in rooms, which are finished in alabastine: $13.00
Servant’s house, privy, and barn: $108.00
House, as per specifications: $2,118.77
Cost of correcting a mistake of the Architect: $8.00
Using rived cypress, instead of sawed pine shingles, and of a change in amount of railing: $28.00
Cost of fencing the yard unknown: ?
