These neologisms demonstrate the versatility of the Spanish language, its evolution over time, and the inherent challenge of labeling a large, diverse group of people from one region of the world into a few characters. After all, Latinidad manifests itself in a myriad of ways, including language, cultures, nationalities, gender, and religion.

This digital project adopts the use of ‘Latinx’ to refer to people from, or with heritage of, Latin America. This term is prevalent in U.S. academic circles and being rapidly adopted by the younger Latinx population. As young adults conduct research at Davidson in the future, the term Latinx will be legible to new generations of Latinx students who will contribute to this digital repository. Moreover, as a project committed to the inclusion of diverse Latinx voices, this term allows the project to be more inclusive of all Latinx individuals, including gender non-confirming Latinx individuals. In the future, as language continues to evolve, we will continue to adopt terminology conducive to greater inclusivity.

References:

“‘Latinx’ What It Means and Why Supporters of the Term Think You Should Use It.” NBC Los Angeles, www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/latinx-what-it-means-and-why-supporters-of-the-term-think-you-should-use-it-latinx/2530316/.
