Historically, as part of larger systems of power, the voices of the less privileged have been silenced, absent, and erased. This is not a comprehensive resource— rather, we intend for it serve as a mechanism for individuals to take charge of their narratives. This archive is a wealth of information and experience—each student can share their own individualized experience at Davidson. We believe this speaks to the complexity of the Latinx identity as a whole—everyone’s experience is unique to them. We hope that this archive serves as a resource for those conducting research, incoming students, and all those who seek to further their understanding of what it means for different students to be Latinx at Davidson.

This project was possible through a Justice, Equality, and Community (J.E.C.) grant that began in Dr. Jane Mangan’s Spring 2019 U.S. Latinx History course. Through this course, students had the opportunity to assemble mini archives on different themes pertaining to Latinx history on Davidson’s campus, such as Latinx Greek organizations, the Latin American Studies department, and the Organization of Latinx American Students. In the subsequent school year, three student researchers set out to collect the oral histories of Latinx students who had graduated from Davidson. This archive amalgamates the research produced over the span of two years. We are actively working to expand this collection in the upcoming years. We hope that you find their stories as powerful and important as we do.

Nuestra Historia captures the presence and memories of Latinx identity on Davidson College’s campus, primarily through the oral histories of alumni of Latinx or Latin American descent.
