class="has-text-align-center wp-block-heading" id="jane">Dr. Jane Mangan

A serendipitous “gap year” in the Chile in the 1980s set me on the path to writing and teaching Latin American history. Since then I have lived and researched in Mexico, Spain, Peru and Bolivia, and have visited numerous other countries in the region. I’m passionate about the region I study and especially hope to bring awareness to the role of its history in the present moment. I teach a range of Latin American history courses at Davidson, covering 1492 to NAFTA and the US-Mexico border to Tierra del Fuego. Outside of teaching, I am honored to serve as mentor to middle school and high school girls through Circle de Luz, a non-profit organization that aims to boost Latina post-secondary education through targeted programming and scholarships.

Several years ago, I developed a new course on Latino history in the hopes of expanding curriculum. In this course, students frequently lamented the limited number of more Latinx/Latino/Hispanic voices in our readings. When Davidson launched the Justice, Equality, and Community grants funded through the Mellon Foundation, it seemed like a great moment to record voices about Davidson’s own Latinx experiences so that important history will be more fully available in the future. Students in History 259 as well as a few others who came onto the project have taken this idea and turned it into an essential record of history at our institution.

Cassie Harding ’20

I will always cherish my time collaborating with my peers and Dr. Mangan on this oral history archive because history, herstory, and their stories all speak truth to power. I, a woman of intersectional identities, found my conversations with the participants not only insightful but evocative because they shared how they understood their place within the Davidson space; I learned their triumphs, challenges, and many surprises in between. I hope that whoever engages with this work will do so with an open mind, intention, and empathy. In my career as a public historian, I intend to work to elevate the narratives of resilient, ever-evolving communities of color.

Gina Martinez ’20

          Gina Martinez graduated in May 2020 from Davidson College with a Bachelor of Arts in Hispanic Studies. “I felt so lucky to work on this project, especially as a Charles scholar. I was able to connect with and learn about the legacy of the Charles experience at Davidson from a personal perspective. Connecting with older scholars also highlighted the magic, power, and resiliency in this special community,” Martinez says about the project. She is currently living in Chicago. She is set to begin her Peace Corps service in the next year, where she will be in Zambia working on a maternal & child health and HIV awareness program.

Laura Collins ’21

I started with this project in a class that I took with Dr. Mangan on US Latinx history. In that class, we learned about archive-building and narrative construction. The class culminated in group archive projects on a plethora of different topics, ranging from Latinx Greek Life to Davidson’s Latin American Studies department to food and restaurants. I joined this archive’s construction in February 2020. Something that I have really enjoyed about this project is having the opportunity to hear the different perspectives and experiences of Davidson Latinx alumnae. This project provides the mechanism for students to tell their own story and I find this type of agency in narrative construction very empowering.

Jorge Torres Villalva ’21

It has truly been a privilege, honor, and joy to be a collaborator of this archive. If anything, this archive is evidence of the multifaceted Latinx identity – one that cannot fit in a single box. For much of my Davidson experience, I had always been curious about the previous work and accomplishments of former Latinx students who I shared commonalities within various aspects of my life, such as language, culture, etc. When I went in search for answers in the college’s archives, I could not help but notice the extremely limited archival material available on Latinx voices. After conducting multiple oral histories, it has been fascinating to learn about the different ways Latinx alumni have navigated the same campus I walk through to get to class. This archive has allowed me to remediate some of that lost history – empowering Latinx alumni, current students, and future students…who have yet to walk through the same halls I do.

Connecting with older scholars also highlighted the magic, power, and resiliency in this special community.
